I am German, Irish and American Indian. When I fill out applications 99% of the time, it will ask what race. It only allows you to mark one thing.
When I tell them I have American Indian in my family, they say I have to be at least 20% and have papers.
I don't like just writing white, because I am not. No one on my mothers side of the family kept any type of records as the % of Indian.
How do you get records? I tried to a long time ago, but they told me it could get as expensive as $100,000.
Does anyone know a less expensive alternative to finding your heritage?

Yup, I feel bad for only marking white if for some reason I HAVE to mark it and can only pick one...I guess I have to stay true to what people would perceive me as.

I do find it odd though since most people are bound to be a mix of something now. Mostly, I say just skip that part.

You are not required to mark that box and it shouldn't even be on the app. It is a form of intimidation designed to make you think that you will be rejected if you do not mark it. It is illegal for them to use that as a criterion, but it is done all the time. Sort of like the publishers clearing house - they SAY you don't have to buy anything to win, but the want you to think that you really do.

Nope. You could try getting a DNA test. I'm not sure how accurate it is but it may be worth a try.
