Ask for help with something. Or talk about common things,things they can have an opinion on. i.e Which is best a lite dinner or a heavy one? Should I wash at night or in the morning? What's the best way to get downtown or the civic center? Or be straight forward and say I'd like to make a new friend today, Hi I'm so and so my likes are painting movies and good books. Extend your hand for the shake.

Make a comment on something mutual to them and yourself.
for instance if you are in a long grocery ilne say something like...."Wow....I have the talent for picking long lines: Then smile. If they want to talk back they will, if not they won't.
A smile and eye contact work well. If you get the message from their face that they think you are intrusive, then stop talking.

I just pick something in the immediate area and comment on it and usually they give their comment too. Like for example: If I 'm standing somewhere and see a car pass whether its a bomb or a looker I make a comment on it.

Comment on the weather... Everyone has an opinion on what the weather is to them at that moment....
Or pick out something ON one person in particular such as a pair of shoes that you like and ask where they got them... Everyone like to feel they have something special!

If you are a party or bar or so, my fave way to start up a convo, is to comment about the food/drinks. "Wow, this is good, have you tried this before?" and take it from there!

say hi then start out saying your name, ask them how ther doing and flow with them.
