Methyl tert butyl ether. Fuel additive for gasoline. Ethers contain oxygen so when added to fuel they help prevent the production of certain combustion byproducts (pollution) that increase when oxygen is insufficient (incomplete combustion).

Problems? In trying to help air pollution, a new water pollution problem is created. Ethers are very polar, that is, they dissolve well in other polar solvents (like alcohol, like WATER) and so when an old gasoline tank starts to leak, it's a bigger problem because the MTBE escapes into the ground & water supply further faster than other gasoline components.

Please see links. It's good to be curious - it leads to a fuller understanding of the world !
