No, not a betta. A killifish.

No, but think I have seen them at PetSmart on several occasions. Can't be sure on the pricing because I really have no interest in them, and the prices tend to vary from state to state (heck, from area to area).

If you don't mind ordering them online, you can get them at Live Aquaria.

I have never seen killifish for sale in any pet store. It is possible they could order them for you, if you ask. Most pet stores do not carry killifish because many of them (not all, though) have short life spans. These fish breed in puddles that dry up after a few months. Most annual killies live less than a year. Some of them are very beautiful! As an added bonus they are small fish used to living in puddles so they do well in small tanks.

A good way to get some killies is to buy eggs. The eggs can be dried and shipped inexpensively. Just add water and you have baby killies (though you must have proper food for the fry). Eggs are available on ebay and other auction sites as well as from killiefish groups and clubs.

Try www.aka.org as a starting place for info on these fish.

Though they do not typically stock them at either PetCo stores near me, I have seen them on occasion. I'm sure if you asked, they could get you one of the more common ones, such as a Panchax or Golden Wonder Killi, as they are usually labeled at the store.

If they can't do that, see if they have any Aphyosemion species, which are the panchax/golden wonder (though they are often mislabeled) since they may just list the scientific name.

If you're looking for a specific kind of Killi, you'll need to find a breeder nearby, a bid on them on a site like eBay or http://www.aquabid.com , or at an aquarium society that meets near you. There are usually a few people that keep and breed Killifish in each society, so if they have an online forum, you can feel free to ask there.

Petco does not carry kilifish on a normal basis seeing as Killifish are a little more difficult to take care of and the "Killifish People" are very anal about the way they are taken care of ie: no hybrids.

I would suggest joining some Killfish... club or forum or something to find out more seeing as people who keep them are very elite.

They look similar to female Bettas and you are probably better off asking. Mos pet stores carry them but you never know what tank they are in. I've seen them with female Bettas, cichlids, barbs and almost anything. Male/female pairs are easy to pick out.

Don't go to petco. they treat their fish bad. Petland or a private company is a better bet
