I once had two pet hens and they were in the house one day when I fed the dogs, one of the chickens stole a piece of cooked chicken from one of the dogs bowls and ran away with it before eating it. Is that very wrong or just slightly wrong?

The chickens weren't hungry, they had the very best food including live mealworms, and had access to the garden. I just brought them into the house now and again because they were pets. I only had those two at the time and they're now with someone else.

Chickens as well as most animals don't have the concept of right & wrong. To them it was just food.

Humans have come up with the concept of not eating our own.

Now I would be concerned if your chicken started stalking, killing and eating the other chickens........THAT would be wrong.

the only reason cannibalism is wrong is because humans know better. If someone were to make, say, a human-burger, but pretend it was made of another meat and give it to you and you ate it, it wouldn't be wrong of you to eat the burger. You didn't know, it's not your fault you ate it. Likewise, your hens didn't know they were eating another chicken. It's not like they're going to start going after each other for food any time soon... it wasn't a conscious action, especially since chickens aren't the smartest animals in the world, i'm sure they'd eat whatever's put in front of them that's got nutrients.

its not wrong at all! right and wrong is a human design resulting from our individuality, personalities and morals - its what makes us the race we are.
The chicken just saw a piece of protein in front of it, and driven by survival instincts - ate it! Animals see things as they really are - meat is meat, it wouldn't have invisaged the poor chicken it used to be, or have the capacity to do so.
i.e, if you had a pet dog for ten years who loved you dearly, and you died locked in the house with it - it would eat you!

Did the hen know it was chicken? If not then she can't be wrong - she didn't know she was eating a comrade!!

I'm due to get some hens soon, so your story is a good lesson for me!!

Also, didn't Mad Cow Disease start with cows being fed cows or something - watch out, Mad Chicken Disease will come soon!!!

LOL :-)

I suppose if the hen took it itself then there was nothing you could do to stop it. its a bit like cannibalism though!
Hens bred for eating get fed food made from other chickens and fish heads so I think that is worse than your hen stealing a bit chicken, I wouldnt worry about it.

Was the chicken concerned about this and did he want you to clarify this issue for him? You may just want to have a good talk with him and explain that eating another chicken was not the right thing to do! I am sure he will be filled with remorse when he comes to the realization of what he did! Until then, keep trying to explain this to him and......be patient!

Yes, it is wrong but you weren't at fault in exposing them to the temptation. You did it in all innocence.

What is wrong is for factory farmers to deliberately feed their chickens products made from other chickens (this is common practice) which therefore leads to increased rates of disease.
And then we eat those chickens. - UGH!

My great-grandfather was a missionary who ate food he was offered by people he thought had become Christian in Melanisia. He subsequently learned that he still had a job to do because he'd inadvertantly eaten human flesh. Was he wrong to eat it?

just make sure it's cooked (eggs too)...I give my chickens every scrap except onion or garlic, the eggs will taste that way....they will eat anything....not sure why (something with the gullet) but they can eat rat poison and not have a problem.

it is wrong and in the UK illegal to feed meat to poultry. It is wrong because it is a great way for them to catch diseases like fowl pest and the like which could cause the deaths of millions of birds.
