You could skip the parachute if you wrap the egg in several layers of platic bubble wrap.

Your "egg drop" should be in a box, no bigger than 6" X 6" and NOT have a parachute on it!!

The reason for the "egg drop" is to see if there is some way that the egg company can repackage the egg so that they wont BREAK!

Your parachute negates the entire episode, because its external, and not internal.

Ditch the parachute idea...

Try using very light weight fabric. Very light weight! It is important to use a material that wont stay creased when folded so it can quickly unravel itself and catch the wind. Try something like silk or fake silk. and string. This will work good.

you need to make it to size..figure that the average male is around 150 -200 ponds that jump from air planes and the chute is at least 75 times wider than the man..( or even wider than that )you need to make the chute very very wide...and maybe you can use pantyhose material or some very thin type material from a fabric store that resembles silk...
