Life as a biochemical process requires respiration (oxidization of fuels), food intake (getting materials to burn), growth (mass increment), reproduction (ability to leave copies of itself). All of this characteristics involve METABOLISM, wich is common to all life in earth.

Not all living beings move, or reproduce, or respond to stimuli, but most do.

Not all living things respire. Respiration requires the use of an electron transport chain to make ATP. Many living things survive by fermentation, which is completely different from respiration.

Not all living things can move. Plants and coral are 2 examples of living things that cannot move.

The criteria shared by *all* living things include:

1) made of 1 or more cells
2) contain DNA as genetic material
3) respond to stimuli
4) metabolize (take in energy and carbon and make waste)
5) reproduce
6) evolutionary change
