Eliminate odd numbers (8 times anything will give you an even)

Now, I just divided those numbers by 8 and wrote down which ones came out evenly

64 (8x8)
144 (8x18)
256 (8x32)
400 (8x50)
576 (8x72)
784 (8x98)

There are only 31 perfect squares to consider. You should be able to count the ones divisible by 8 in just a couple minutes.

Hint: Don't try any odd numbers. That immediately eliminates half the possibilities.
