Sheep have one stomach that's split into 4 compartments, or chambers. Cows and goats have similar arrangements.

From front to back the chambers are called: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum.

The rumen is by far the largest of the four chambers.

The first three chambers are considered "non-glandular"...in other words, they don't actually digest food per se. The last chamber, the abomasum, is glandular and functions the same way as your stomach.

The reason these animals need all these extra stomach chambers is because they eat a lot of plant material. Plant material contains cellulose, which our mammalian bodies cannot normally break down. The rumen in sheep and cows is a large "vat" containing billions of bacteria that help break down this plant material, allowing the animal to later absorb the nutrients from the plant matter in its intestine.

Hope that helps!

sheeps are also ruminants (like cows) and thus have four chambers (aka stomachs) that they use to digest their food.
