I have a 2001 mitsubish montero sport, 2wd automatic.

I changed the oil on it for the first time on this vehicle, and accidently drained the transmission pan.

I realized my mistake after it drained, so I replaced the drain plug, and got some ATF.

The vehicle holds 2.7 quarts of fluid. I put one quart in, and there was still no measurment on the dipstick. I put the other in, and it was difficult to tell, as fluid was all up the stick. I thought it was from running down the dipstick tube from when I added it.

I drove a couple of miles, and it slipped a bit, so parked it for 2 days.

I just ran the vehicle, changing from gear to neutral a bunch of times, thinking maybe it would activate the pump.

I just checked it after it has been running for a short time, and the dipstick is dry as a bone. There is no sign of leakage.

Any suggestions?

I called a hotline for autozone to make sure I purchased the correct ATF. I bought the one they recomended for the vehicle.

I have a printout from autozone that says its cappacity is 2 2/7 quarts.

When I drained it, I don't think more than 2 quarts came out.

1st you will need to run the vehicle - the transmission on that vehicle takes more then 2.7 quarts of transmission oil when drained from the pan - it takes : 9.3 quarts total system - I think you will need to add 3.5 to 4 quarts. BUT the best way is this - add fluid till you get it to the center of the cross marks on the dip stick - a way to tell how much u have after you are adding fluid is put the car in gear - from park to reverse then to drive 2 times then turn off the vehicle in drive . that will pull the transmission fluid back and then start the vehicle up again and check it.

Keep that up a few times but the vehicle must be fully warmed up or the reading will be off.

If you drained out approx. 2 quarts, put 2 quarts back in and let the engine warm up and while sitting still put it in forward and then in reverse a few times and then check the fluid level and add a little at a time until when you check it it's on the full mark.

Put in half a bottle at a time. To check have the engine running, truck in park. I used to have one of these a year back, they hold more then 2 quart of oil. Good luck. To be safe just add one more and take it to AutoZone and have one of the guys also check it for you. I know it will take a lot of courage for you to go in there and ask for help, but I sure is better then paying to have the whole trans replaced of fixed.

add fluid one quart at a time. when doing this...it will show on the stick as it is still in the fill tube...if it doesn't show clearly on the stick when you pull it and whipe it clean then add more. Be sure to wipe the stick clean and give the fluid time to enter the transmission. Also read your dipstick...it will tell you check the fluid while the engine is running either in park or neutral...if in neutral be sure to set the park brake or block the wheels.

You have to check the trans fluid level on flat ground with the trans warm to get an accurate reading. Also before checking the level -with the brake applied go Thu the gears R N D 2 1 Then check an don't over fill the trans.

to check the level of fluid in an automatic transmission, start the engine, while holding the brake, put it in drive, then second, then low if you have low, then reverse, finally park. Leave the engine running and check the level. Add until it is at the full mark.

Do NOT overfill.

Add another quart. I believe your vehicle holds much more than 2.7 qts.
How much did you drain out.

I believe transmissions hold more than just 2.7 quarts.. you might want to make sure it doesn't hold more....

Just keep checking the trans fluid level until you get it right. Then you'll be fine.
