I have a peom here, I want to ask the theme and controling idea?
''Life for my child is simple, and is good.
He knows his wish. Yes, but that is not all.
Because I know mine too.
And we both want joy of undeep and unabiding1 things,
Like kicking over a chair or throwing blocks out of a window
Or tipping over an ice box pan
Or snatching down curtains or fingering an electric outlet
Or a journey or a friend or an illegal kiss.
No. There is more to it than that.
It is that he has never been afraid.
Rather, he reaches out and lo the chair falls with a beautiful crash,
And the blocks fall, down on the people’s heads,
And the water comes slooshing sloppily out across the floor.
And so forth.
Not that success, for him, is sure, infallible.
But never has he been afraid to reach.
His lesions are legion.
But reaching is his rule.''

The theme would be of the curiosity being human nature, not limited by age. The difference between a child and an adult is that the adult may have experienced enough negative reactions to certian cituations, and may be unable to see the simplicity that is involved in the most simplest of things. Simplicity can bring joy to those that dont experience many things, but over time and through experience the simplest things become not so simple, causing them to loose a lot of the value they would other wise have. Those with out experience, have nothing to base success or failure, and are therefore able to define there result by their own definition. Of course over time, and with experience that definition may change

This is a mother talking of her child - She tells us of his passion to explore and learn of his world and to take pleasure in the touch and feel of things that he discovers - BUT he is not afraid (suggesting that her greater experience has bred caution in her mind) but his rule is reaching (out) -unafraid of the consequences. Taking pleasure from all that occurs good or bad. Implying that perhaps she should follow his example -give in to her desires take the illegal kiss. Be unafraid.

The theme is that of reflection and prediction. The experienced looking back at his or her life and seeing it in the life of the innocent that is about to come to pass. The reminder to continue to reach regardless of the cost.

Don't make poetry an intellectual pursuit, then you will alway miss the point.
