It's ok that he knows - it will just make that first conversation slightly awkward - but go for it - stop the texting and just go talk to him!

So he knows you like him, and he's giving you know answer? I'd suggest straight up asking him for an answer, or at least ask the friend, and be prepared for the consequences. Only he would know if he likes you or not.
