Classes in literature and journalism are great, but the best might be a writer's workshop. That way you can be around people with similar career goals who can offer feedback on your work. It will also help you get used to criticism, which is something everyone in the arts needs to learn. Just don't be intimidated if it gets a little nasty, because writing is VERY competitive and tension can mount really quickly. But once you get past that, the lessons that you learn can be invaluable.

An English major is good, of course, but honestly the most important thing is to a) read lots of books, both recent and old b) cultivate lots of interests and c) write your brains out. The real writers I know have a sort of pathological need to write and enough patience to revise until their work comes out well. They also tend to be consumers of life. That doesn't mean that you have to become an alcoholic bank robber, it just means that you to become the sort of person who finds life, the universe and people within it interesting. Have fun!

ooh ooh, i've been wanting to be an author since i was seven! in terms of schooling, you need loads of english credits (ap english, modern lit, etc.) and extra stuff (like journalism/newspaper or creative writing or literary magazines). liberal arts colleges are best, but otherwise, writing is a pretty open-ended career. you can major in political science and become a writer. social science and english classes help the most since they involve a lot of alluding and composing. it's pretty hard to seek out the publication offer of your dreams, but keep on submitting works to wherever you find and build connections with some good literature professors. whatever you do, just don't stop writing!

It would help to be an English Major,I suppose. I think what would
be needed more than a university education would be the talent
and the dedication to do it,as well as good plot ideas.

a formal education is not a requirement to become a professional writer.....what you do need is a good imagination, knowledge of writing good sentences, commitment, desire to learn, how to build characters, creative writing...

a bachelor's will help you and a master's even more... and obviously a PhD will do even more. really, you can major in a whole number of areas, but i would have either your major or minor be in English. i would study in the area you want to write in-- if it is history, art history, literature, etc.... then major or minor in that area.
