I have a 1988 Dodge Colt hatchback. I have oil in my engine but my oil light keeps coming on. Can anyone tell me whether it is the oil light sensor or the oil sending unit and where might each of these items be located.

I think in that car they are one in the same. It would probably be the oil sending unit. Try changing this first, it is a cheap fix. If the light continues to come then your oil pump may be bad. In that case try putting higher weight oil like 20 W 50. If the light still persists then you would need to change the oil pump. This repair usually costs a lot of money, and I would recommend that you condom the car in that case.

The oil light is red, not orange, for a reason. It is dangerous and could be harmful to your engine to drive with the oil light on. Find out why immediately. If there is plenty of oil in the engine, the pick up screen could be plugged and not allowing oil through. The oil pump could be defective and not circulating oil, or the sensor might need to be replaced. Call your favorite mechanic and get it looked at. Ask if you can drive it in, or if it should be towed, but don't ignore it.

The oil pressure switch is located by the oil filter. The switch is the sensor. Now you can try replacing the switch and see if the light stays out or is the switch doing it job and reporting low oil pressure.

Some models have the switch mounted near the oil filter housing or in the side of the block near the distributor.

It may be time for an oil change. You need to take it somewhere where they'll check it.
