The best way to understand a job is to look at job descriptions.
For example, take a look at the job site for Comcast cable http://www.comcast.com/about/careers/jobsearch.ashx. Find the job you may like and read the job description. The description itself usually explains really well what the required credentials and trainings are.
I suspect ITT Technology Institute http://www.itt-tech.edu/, and alike, would have a lot of the courses you will need.

Apply at the cable company!
