The fog is a good thing. It is a bloom of beneficial bacteria that is developing to convert fish waste (ammonia) into nitrites, and then into less harmful nitrates (which you deal with when you do weekly water changes of 25% of the water. Don't do anything to your tank. The fog will clear up in a few days, then do a 25% water change, if the tank doesn't fog up again, it is ready for your first pair of fish.

Most likely cause is dirty gravel. Gravel bought from aquarium stores tends to require more washing then gravel bought from almost anywhere else. DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER,EVER USE SOAP TO CLEAN A FISH ANYTHING.
If you have to clean a fish tank use rock salt, pure bleach or just plain water and wipe it out with your hand anything else will kill the fish. You cannot get all of the soap out of an aquarium. It leaves behind a thin film that may continue to poison your fish for years. Rinse your gravel repeatedly under cold running water until the water runs clear. Once you have made sure your gravel, tank is clean fill the tank with water treated with water ager/conditioner and turn on the filter and heater if you have one and let it run for a week then introduce no more than 4 small fish and let it run for a week. Buy cheap fish as you run the risk of losing them at this point. This is called cycling the tank. Once your tank has completed this cycle you can fairly safely introduce anything up to 4 fish depending on size a month. Keeping healthy fish is really easy if you exercise patience and don't overcrowd the tank.

Because pet stores are usually wrong. They just want you to do whatever costs the most money right away. Your supposed to set up the tank, with the filter, and the heater for at least 3-4 days before getting the fish. Dont feed the fish as much, because fish usually die from over-feeding, not under feeding, and most food clouds up the water. Dont put so many fish in. If you have goldfish, then you will always have a foggy tank. Goldfish crap more then they eat. They also spread a lot of diseases

It will take some time for that fog to disappear Your tank has to go thru what is called a cycle this will take about 4 to 6 weeks. and the dirtier the filter gets the cleaner the tank will get. I have been doing fish tanks for almost 34 years and I have instructed many people to set up fresh and salt waters I will extend my services to you as well email me at barrygeller@yahoo.com in the subject line put fish so that I know it is a question. Trust me It will clear.

Well for number one don't ever trust fish stores..Yes you should just rinse everything before you put it in the tank..DO NOT USE SOAP!! When I set my tank up just a couple of months ago..I put mosquito fish in there first about 2 dozen..then keep those in there for about 2 weeks then add goldfish..keep those in there with the mosquito fish...I still have 1 mosquito, 2 big goldfish and 1 small fancytail in there..its going to take you months before you get a fish you really want in there..you have to have aged water..you need to make sure that you test your water..I go to www.drfostersandsmiths.com for all of my fish stuff..Do you have a local pet store that is a ma and pa one? Only go to those types of stores and ask questions..DO NOT GO TO WALMART,PETCO or anything like that..They don't know anything..Hopefully that helps you..Good Luck!

This is a great question, asked by many people. I suggest not to put fish in until after 1 week.
What kind of fish are you planning on keeping?
Gravel could cause fog. Did you wash the gravel out? Also, starting fishtanks without gravel may still have some fog. Let the filter run. After a few days, the fog will clear.

They sell drops to clear the water, because it's a pretty common and can be caused by a lot of things. Try buying some, and put in a few drops.

just run your filter until the water clears up. please put the whole bag on top of the water and let the water adjust to the same temperature before you let the fish go into the tank.
