yes, it's quite simple, if you mix anything together it forms a molecule. although an element from group 1, and an element from group 17 mix the best. and take note, metals give electrons, and nonmetals take electrons, therefore they mix well together.

Just mixing them is not a chemical change. Sometimes you need to jump start the change (activation energy), sometimes they need so little activation energy that they begin on what appears to be on their own.

In this Case mixing the two, they would start reacting. The Mg would react with the HCl (a single replacement reaction) resulting in Magnesium Chloride (a salt) and Hydrogen (given off as bubbles).

Collect the bubbles-insert a flame---pop!!
