No, they shouldnt.

Of course there are some colleges that are extremely selective - the Ivies, Duke, Stanford, U of Chicago, etc.... and this is a good thing because they give a terrific education to the hardworking and bright students who go there. But most colleges are not very selective. This is basically a good thing for at least two reasons.

First, in 40 years as a college teacher I have seen hundreds of students who arrived at college clueless about life and academics. But, in four years at college, they wound up in pretty good shape and they learned really a lot. In high school they were just not ready to learn, and in college they figured it out. If they had not been allowed in to college, they would have been dissatisfied all their lives.

Second. the USA needs educated people. The days ofthe assembly lines are over. Every single person we have needs to be educated to the very best of their ability. For many students, this can not happen in 12 years. They need more time, and the USA needs them to be as highly educated as we can get them. We can't afford to be snobby about this. If we don't educate them, they will not be able to function in the workforce and then we will spend the next 60 years taking care of them. It is a lot cheaper to educate someone than to give them welfare, or worse, have them wind up in prison. There is a bumper sticker "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance!"

If you are in a school where the kids around you don't measure up to your ideas of what students should be, then you probably should move up to a higher level school. Or, take some harder courses --- there arent too many dummies taking physics with calculus, or advanced tax law!!!!

Colleges should be more selective! I work at a for profit college and I can not believe the morons they let in. I am talking Wonderlic scores of 9, 11, 14. Most program majors only require a wonderlic score of 15 to be admitted without probation. The IQ equivalency of someone with a wonderlic score of 15 is below average intelligents!!! A wonderlic score of 25-28 is considered normal intelligence. A test score of 9 is retarded!

Letting people like this who do not read, write or analyze information on a college level graduate with a degree cheapens the worth of everyone else's degree! They belong in vocational school to learn a skill. I busted my *ss to get into college and to earn my degrees. It just isn't right. They also slow down the pace of the class, because they require more attention to grasp the subject. Frankly, I think the other students who are on level suffer for it. I am also starting to wonder if stupidity of these low scorers rubs off on to other students of average intelligents.

Indeed they should be .. to separate the chaff from the grain. This way you will be doing a favour to those students also who have no real aptitude but driven by other considerations that can only make them more unfulfilled.

They should be very selective. America is getting lazy, and you can't go very far without education. So, if people are driven to get good grades to get into college...America will improve.

I THINK THEY SHOULD BE MORE STRICT. THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY GOING ON TO SCHOOL JUST TO GO TO SCHOOL AND NOT HAVING ANY IDEA WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. THEN THEY CAN'T FIND A JOB BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T SPECIALIZE IN ANYTHING.
