The service wasn't great, but not bad either. How would you handle this?

I usually offer to pay or at least cover the tip. What about even if you go dutch? Or if you pay the tab and they cover the tip but it is a horrible tip? How do you supplement the tip without offending your friend?

I would nicely thank them for buying me this great meal and insist that I do the tipping myself saying that I'd be more relaxed if I did it. This way I can leave a good tip without embarrassing them or hurting their feelings, specially after taking me to such a great place.

Inquire why the horrible tip. I know some people view the tipping and service differently so maybe that person saw more of the service being bad than you may have thought yourself. Then again, some people expect a heckuva lot more so their standard is higher. Maybe that is it.

If the person paid the bill, I´d kindly tell him/her I´d pay the tip as that´s the least I can do after having him pay for the food..I used to do that with an old flame...he never got upset or felt bad at all .

Leave a decent tip yourself.
I was in a training class a few years back and one thing we all agreed on was a decent tip in restaurants (nothing less than 20% and usually more) Of course, we were all being reimbursed; but seriously, leave a good tip, they are working hard too.!.

Did this happen recently?

I used to work in restaurants so I generally try to overtip. I like to leave 10% if the service was ok. 20+ percent if the service was great. If I leave 50%, the service was "Ayiee!"

Who ever is paying gets the choice on what to give as a tip! Respect that, you just had a free meal!!

I don't supplement their tip. They tip what they feel they should tip, and so do I. I don't give somebody a certain amount of money just because society says I should.

I would excuse myself as we were leaving, go back to the table on the pretense of having forgotten something, and make things right with the waiter/waitress. (I would supplement the lousy tip to bring it up to at least 15%.)

Leave a couple dollars in addition to the poor tip. You got a free meal, so don't b**** or bring it up.

always 15%...except for horrible service then they know at 5%. Exceptional service gets above and beyond....I'd be embarrassed but on the other hand I'm not the one paying....
