Seriously, guys dont really give a darn about birthdays especially at 30. I dont even care about birthdays anymore and I really havent since I turned 21. I think girls are more into getting gifts because it shows their mate thought of them and remembered and of course they like stuff, lol. If you cant think of anything that he needs or maybe a new tool or something that he wants then just make it a day for him... Make him breakfast in bed and tell him he should invite his friends over to hang out and drink beer and play cards all night or something. Let him have his own little guy party and go somewhere with your friends just to give him space, unless he would want you there to hang out as well.
Oh and I wouldnt suggest giving him money as someone said above because this is his 30th bday not his 12th...
I just remembered that guys like gadgets so go to Sharper Image if you have the money to spend and get him something from there that he'll think is cool.

Some presents are not given wrapped. I'm sure he has someone he has not seen or heard from in a while like an old high school friend or even a relative. Try contacting them and invite them to the party. Get them on the phone for him if they live too far away. Everyone has someone that they just haven't had the time to see or stay in contact with and always wish they could. How many times has he said "I'd like to see ______". Its usually very inexpensive and always welcome.

A surprise party somewhere? Take him out for a night on the town. Really, just being together is enough for most guys. I am not materialistic so being together is good with me. Can you get tickets to a football game. Does he even like football? Hope you find some good ideas.

Try sending kids to a babysitter overnight (if you have them, that is..), make him a candlelit dinner, get a fire going, greet him at the door with nothing but an apron on or just a big red bow. Well, you know the rest....

30 is a biggie. Buy him golf clubs or something in line with his favorite activity. Sex that he doesn't expect with you doing all of the work is also great.
