Is it alright to jump into a Red Hot Chili Peppers tab book without practicing basics??

I pretty much already know how to read tab, and I know the basic E-based chords, and barre chords. I don't really find enjoyment in practicing songs like Kumbaya or Mary had a Little Lamb. I know this will be very difficult but do you guys know of anyone who has had success learning this way??
