My best friend did today and she's mortified. Luckily she wasn't injured, but she thinks everyone will always think of that when they see her.

As a lot of people already said, everyone falls at least once. In fact a lot of people say if you never fall, it means you aren't trying hard enough. People have fallen in my class and I think nothing of it, neither does anyone else. No big deal. Just ask her how she'd feel about someone else if they fell in class ... maybe that will help her realize that other people don't see it as a big deal either.

Falling is OK as long as no one is injured. I have lots of crash landings in practise. Crash landings come from a slippery floor, trying hard, or avoiding another dancer. I have fallen on stage twice and had lots of close calls. My group does folk dancing at a lot (more than 1 per month) of wedding receptions at hotels. My most spectacular stage fall came from from trying to land a pike on a slippery marble floor. From six feet up I landed in pike position on my 'dignity'. No big deal. Just get up and keep dancing. No one in my group said anything and I don't think anyone except me remembers.

Fallen in dance class? Yes, many times, especially when learning folk dance.

Fallen in dance class while demonstrating the dance when you were the instructor? Yes. Now that's embarassing.

Oh, and I did bruise something. My "ego".

You get up, dust yourself off, and dance some more. Act like a professional, even when you maintain your amateur status as a dancer.

It will soon be forgotten.

Of course! Everybody falls at some point...it's only a matter of time. It only means you were trying hard and dancing full out, not just marking it. It would be strange if there was a dancer who has never fallen...especially in class!

Everyone falls. It gives ya a chance to just laugh and not be serious. But then you get back up and put your serious face on. It really is no big deal, f you don't fall, I would think there is something wrong with you! Sometimes it can be embarrassing, but you just have to make the best out of it!

Oh yes, I've fallen MANY times. During pirouettes, grand jetes, regular turns, en pointe, arabesques- its part of the learning process. My worst one was when I did a torjete, landed wrong, and ended up in a cast with crutches for 6 weeks- it ended up being a severely sprained ankle. So your friend should be thankful she wsn't hurt, and TRUST me- no one will remember very soon.

Falling. I can tell you so many stories, but there's one that really matters to me and made a difference for me.
I have a habit of saying "Damn, I fell" whenever I lose my balance. I don't really fall, since I stop just before I do.
So my dance teacher (a wise, wise man) told me "You always say you're falling and you never do. You can never learn how to do ANYTHING if you're not ready to make mistakes. Fall down, exaggerate, step WRONG. If you're not open to the idea of making mistakes you're not open to the idea of something new coming in your dancing and in your life."
Wise words. I keep them very close to my heart.
I wish the best to you and your friend.

Absolutely! I'm terrible. Everyone will probably either be more quiet or ask your friend if she's ok, but that's it. Maybe a mean person or two will joke about it.

Bottom line: In two classes, it'll be forgotten.

She ought just to make a joke out of it herself, walk in, and announce that she is taking requests for what her next fall should be, you know?

Nope it happens to everyone at least once. Tell her to be thankful she just fell down in class rather than on stage. She's also really lucky that she didn't get hurt. I caused a bone bruise when I fell once.
