Explain contention that talk shows can both normalize and " freakify" queer families.
Have the talk shows you have seen done more to normilize or freakify nontraditional families?
Overall do you think daytime talk TV tends to challege or reinforce long-standing myth about famil?
What about other kinds of TV shows, like soap operas, sit-coms, and " reality" TV?

They "freakify" them by putting them on display in order to get ratings. At the same time, the more exposure we have to these things, the more accepted - and thus "normal" they become. We get used to them and the shock value wears off.

The talk shows I've seen were back when they were about something -- Phil Donahue was my favorite. I don't watch today's parade of freaks.

Soap operas are all about drama. They make it seem like every day life is just of one dramatic event right after another. They also romanticize love affairs and rarely show the reality of what it means to be in a relationship. Once the intensity wears off, they drop that one and they're off to the next one.

Sit-coms are a little better in that the comedy in sit-coms in usually based on real life like situations. But they tend to trivialize the problems they pretend to deal with.

"Reality" or unscripted TV puts people in strange situations, usually designed to produce maximum drama, and then watches thier reactions and responses. They tend to choose unstable or extreme personalities in order to provoke the extreme responses.

ELLEN HAS DONE A LOT OF DAMAGE TO THE FAMILY IDEAL AND I THINK SHE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM TV. AS FOR THE SOAPS WHO WATCHES THAT STUFF NOW THEY GOT DIRTY MOVIES YOU CAN WATCH NOW.IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SPRINGER HOW CAN ANYONE WATCH HIM AND COME AWAY WITH ANYTHING BUT CONFUSION. I THINK MOST OF THE PROGRAMS ON TV TODAY JUST FILL A TIME SPACE THAT NO ONE EVENS WATCHES.
