Guess you re talking about "une baguette" or "un pain de campagne".
I d take some baguette as it s world famous even if in most countries, they change the recipees and their baguettes don t have the same taste as they have in France.

There s two theories about the "baguette" but none of them can be proved:
1.The baguette was invented by Napoleon s baker with the purpose to create a bread which is easier to transport for his soldiers... there s even a myth that they carried the baguettes inside their trousers which is in fact not probable at all.
2.The baguette originally was invented in Vienna (so was the Croissant by the way) and imported to France in the 1920s because of a law which prohibited the bakers to work before 4a.m. (a baguette takes less time to bake etc).

Further more, you could also take some "croissants" or some "pain au chocolat" to school.

I always thought it had to do with how it was sliced, like in slicing green beans on an angle called French cut. I thought people typically sliced that bread on an angle so it was French cut style.
