I honestly don't know too much about furry pets, since I haven't really had the opportunity to have one. I would've suggested a turtle, but no reptiles.. From what I know, I'd say chinchilla? Hamsters/mice/rabbits are furry, but they're pretty common. Chinchillas, although not UNcommon, are less common than the animals I previously mentioned. That's the only thing I can think of for now that meets your criteria.

I have a Chinese Water Dragon. They are a lot like Iguanas but are less common. They are fun and enjoy being held. They are carnovors and like to eat goldfish, crickets, and mealworms. Males can get up to four feet and females three feet.

Chinchillas are really cute and soft, and pretty unique. You could also get a sugar glider.
