It really isn't that hard. First thing you do is make a phone call to "one call". They will come out and mark the ground for all buried lines such as gas, phone, electrical, cable and other water lines. Rent a ditch witch to dig your trench for your water line. Make sure your digging your trench at least 12" deep to get below your freeze line or if your in the northern part of the country 18".
Check your water meter to see what size it is. It probably is a 3/4" valve. Then determine what size supply pipe you need.
What are your water needs? How big is your family, will you be adding a lawn sprinkler system in the future? You need to keep all these things in mind when sizing your supply line. a 1" line is usually more than enough for most homes. If I was going to do a sprinkler system though I would go with a 1 1/2" line.

Now get schedule 40 PVC 20' sticks in what ever size you choose. You will also need a few couplings, water pressure valve and a shutoff valve.
You will need PVC pipe cleaner and PVC cement. Tape measure, hack saw, utility knife and your ready to go.

Hope this helps :)

Make sure your ditch is below the "Frost Line", then call a plumber cause you have NO business attempting this if you don't even know how to get started.

I know two things about plumbing which should help you out:
1. **** stinks
2. Water runs downhill
When in doubt refer to rule one.
