After you've researched the type of diamond and setting she likes, go to a diamond dealer and bid on the size and type of stone you can afford. Then take the stone to a local jeweler you trust to have it set. That is the cheapest way to go about getting an amazing ring. Designer brands like Tiffany mark up their rings way too much -- you can get something just as nice if you go about it in a smart way. You are right not to go to the mall.

You didn't say, but I'm assuming you're looking for a diamond engagement ring. Do your research in the local jewelry stores so you know what you want and how much it will cost at retail. Pay close attention to the "4 C's" used to grade and value a diamond. That's the only way you can compare two diamonds to each other. Once you know exactly what you want, you will find much lower prices for similar rings on ebay as compared to your local jeweler in the mall. The key to not getting ripped off is knowledge. Once you have that, you can confortably buy on ebay or from an internet seller without actually hoding the ring in your hand. Good luck, and congratulations!

go to bluenile.com
you can build EVERYTHING on the ring from color, cut, diamond quality.

It shows you pictures of what the ring will look like, the coolest thing ever. They can also send a ring sizer to compare to her existing rings.

I don't know where you are but also if you are close to a tax free state like Delaware, that's a good way to go...
Robin's Delaware Diamonds.

My husband and i found matching rings at a pawn shop. i was pregnant and had to take off my rings because my fingers swelled. we moved and my ring was in a jewelry box in our storage building. when we finally unpacked our things my ring was gone. i thought someone had stole it but when i took my box apart i found it in the bottom underneath some felt. the ring was to small for my swollen fingers and my husband did not have a wedding band so we looked at a pawn shop and found a really nice set for under $300 dollars. good luck.
