I have fit a run of the mill centre light that uses three 50W halogen bulbs.

No. If your standard fixture takes a 50watt bulb and the Halogen takes a 50watt bulb they burn the same amount of energy.

Although Halogen give a crisper, whiter light and you may be able to have a lower wattage bulb for the same illumination.

I agree with the previous answer. 50 watts is 50 watts....it doesn't matter where it's incandescent or halogen. You will probably get more lumins with the halogen for the same energy. That's why they are popular....and why you pay more for them.

Get compact flourescent bulbs. Same lumens for way less power
