All projection in theaters built in last 10 years or so or updated is done by computer. There is supposed to be one technician on duty or on call in case there is a problem, film breaks, etc. But soon all theaters will be digital and the "projection room" may well be in Bangladesh.
My uncle owned a theater back in the 60s in a small college town and he and his kids did all the functions except projection. He hired a pro which was necessary back then. The old hands-on approach to everything was so much more human, more interesting but less reliable.
Sell candy, at least you will get a discount or freebies and see all your school friends come and go. You may also get to see who in town is fooling around if they come in with a floozie.

It's pretty easy - my sister is trained to do it as she works for the odeon but it actually is not that interesting after the first few months so she usually works on the tickets or as an usherette. It requires great attention and alertness but not much lifting.

I don't know how difficult it is, but I would advise against it. Eventually, new technology will surely make cinema projectionists redundant.
