How old is the child? Here's the simplest explanation I can think of:

32.45 times something = 253.11
So we need to divide 253.11 by 32.45

Now, you're looking at a standard division symbol, with 32.45 in front, and 253.11 "housed" under the division bracket.

Take your pencil, and put it on the decimal of 32.45. Draw 2 curves to show that you move the decimal to the right 2 places.

Then take your pencil and put it on the decimal of 253.11. Since you moved the decimal of the front number, you must also move the decimal here - the same number of places as the front number. Then the decimal "housed" under the division sign floats up to the top.

Now, you're looking at 3245 into 25311. This is just long division.
3 goes into 25 about 7 times, so try 7 (to the left of the decimal that "floated" up).
7x3245 = 22715
25311-22715 = 2596

3245 does not go into 2596, so you need to add a zero to the right of the decimal of 25311, and carry that down to 2596.

That gives you 3245 into 25960.
3 goes into 25 about 8 times, so try 8 (to the right of the decimal that "floated" up)
8 times 3245 = 25960

The answer, then, is 7.8.

Whew!

1- Put the problem on paper

32.45x=253.11

2- Divide 253.11 by 32.45

x=253.11/32.45

now you are gonna have to use a calculator because no one is required to divide complicated numers such as this. If they do the teacher SUCKS!
