Some football players are wearing things that look like huge rubber bands around their elbows. What are they and what they are called? I assume that those things improve the circulations of the blood or something?

wearing those bands doesn't promote circulation. actually, by squeezing in that location, you cut the risk of tendons over-stretching.

i'm not a trainer, however, i did stay at a holiday inn express last night!

Actually it relieves tendonitis, aka tennis elbow. I wear one quite often (more like mouse elbow in my case ;-D ).

In my own, very "laymanish" understanding it helps by immobilizing the part of your tendon where it is damaged near the elbow and makes you use the portion of the tendon farther down your elbow instead.
