I just bought a Packard Bell external hard drive. Whenever I try to move files onto it, my computer freezes. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

Thanks!

My computer is only a few years old and I'm using a USB 2 port that I had added. I use other USB devices. No hub. I reformatted the external hard drive so that shouldn't be a problem. I am using windows xp.

Any further thoughts?

Thanks

There was no manual with it. Just a brief bit online which didn't give much away. It is compatible with Windows XP though... supposedly I should have been able to just plug it in and use it. I wish! It's absolutely fine right up until the point where I attempt to use it!

My guess is that a third party program is causing it..examples Anti virus, firewall, etc.... even though it is not installed into that external harddrive these programs access this hardrive and cause your computer to freeze...

i have the same problem with my external harddrive a IOmega... every time i access it and put files in it it freezes... i called IOmega and they told me third party programs is causing it...

you should try entering into your OS into safe mode and try putting files into that external hardrive... if it is okay during safe mode then third party programs are causing your problem.....

hope it workds for you... :)

contrary to what some people believe USB 1.1 will handle an external hard drive - just a bit slower. Check the drive itself and make sure that it is set for master and not slave or CS (cable select). An incorrect setting on the drive will cause the problems you are having. A bad USB cable and insufficient power will also cause it. Is this the only USB device you have attached? If not, are you using a hub? If so and it is not a self-powered hub that could also be your problem.

is the USB port the original USB port with the computer ? try upgrading to a USB 2.0 card, it sounds like your computer is really old, if it is, like if its NOT running windows 2000 or windows XP, then theres not much you can do. Its probably a driver problem with the usb controller, so in my estimate theres probably a 40% chance it will work if you go buy an extra USB card, but its a pain cause you'll have to open your computer to install it, so you may just want to get another computer

try to look at the manual if it is compatible with your OS...also try to install the mother board's software on USB...or put it in the other USB slot...
