Llama
(Llama glama)
The llama’s order is Artiodactyla, and its family is Camelid. There are an estimated 7 million llamas and alpacas in the world.

The llama is about 1.2 (4 feet) meters tall at the shoulder. It has long thick hair that can grow up to 6 inches long . The hair may be brown, buff, gray, white, or black. It has no hump, like its cousin the camel. Llamas' feet have two toes with leathery pads on the bottom of them. That makes them surefooted and good to use as pack animals.

The llamas are found in South America. They like it down near the equator because it is warm year round. South America is where they get the healthiest food and water.

Llamas are gentle, shy, and curious. A llama normally lives for about 15 to 29 years. In a zoo they can usually live for 25 years. If the surroundings are unusual, they only live for about 20 years.

The llama is pregnant for around three hundred fifty (350) days. During this time they sometimes suffer from tiredness, weakness and other such things. The baby is called a"cria." Llamas normally deliver their baby cria without any help. The llama will look a little shabby after the cria is born.

Llamas are inexpensive to keep. In the zoo, the llama will nibble on alfalfa hay and a salt lick. The llama doesn’t need a lot of protein. Llama chow is also fed to the llamas in captivity . In the wild the llama's diet is vegetation. It has the same impact on the environment as a large deer.

The llama protects itself by spitting bad smelling saliva in their enemy’s face. The saliva is made of chewed up grass. Female llamas also spit at male llamas to let them know they are already pregnant.

Llamas have a way of communicating by using their ears, body, and tail. Llamas will hum in a low tone when relaxed, and whinny like a horse when panicked.

Llamas are now being used for camping and as golf caddie animals. A single llama can carry up to 200 pounds for 15 miles. Llamas can be very stubborn at times, especially when they think they are carrying too much. Llamas have been reported as good guards for sheep and other animals, and they are also known for having a magical and peaceful appearance. Their fur is used for clothing and blankets.
