Only true for some people, those without empathy.
Mel Brooks says tragedy is when I get a paper cut, comedy is when you fall down an open manhole and die.

It is the slapstick approach, often funny only because we know it isn't real. But most people don't feel that way about serious trouble. When 9/11 came down, only a few people were laughing.

How do you not understand that one? I guess I won't be critical for today...it means that when something bad happens to someone else, say for instance someone falls or trips in the middle of the hallway at school, it's funny to you but it's not funny to them because it probably hurt. And what do I think of this quote? I think it's true. That kind of thing happens everyday.

Ever heard the saying 'I'm alright Jack'? This applies here. As long as it is not you it is happening to there is nothing to worry about. On a day to day basis most people would probably agree but if you take it on a deeper level and think about the homeless, people who live in war-torn countries etc it does have a different meaning. However, if my mate walked into a lampost I would laugh!

Well, say someone trips and falls flat on their face. It may be funny to you and everyone around them, but to them it's just embarrasing.

So things are funny as long as they're not happening to you.

I think this refers to things like getting stuck in an elevator, or making a mistake. Things that are negative.
And when you get caught in those situations, the last thing you want is for other people to laugh at you.

Let's say you're walking along eating a hamburger.

You accidentally drop the burger, step in it, slip and bust your butt.

To me that might be very funny.

To you, it was not funny.

Get it? I don't really like it that much.

Eh, I've heard better. Everything that happens to other people isn't really funny. Try laughing while clooney gets his fingernails ripped out in Syriana.

Try this one:

"If you can't laugh at yourself, other people will gladly do it for you."

it means that we are sure and quick to laugh when something is happening to others...but if the same thing was happening to us, then it would be a different story. it's easy to judge others, but hard to take it in as being something that's applicable to us.

as long as you're not the one involved, the situation might seem funny, kind of harsh if you think about it....
