I like the oil filled portable "radiator" heaters. They look like a small version of the old iron steam radiators, only they operate using electricity. They are a convection device and radiate the heat they generate. Most of them have a built in thermostat that shuts the unit off and on as needed according to the temperature you set. I like them because they are quiet, don't require frequent cleaning, and are generally safe to be left unattended.

These units are fairly inexpensive and are widely available. Both Lowe's and Home Depot carry them. You might also find them in WalMart and other similar stores.

Good luck with your heating solution.

I like the oil heater answer but I once lived in a studio that had what I think was called thermal heating, copper wiring or pipes under the flooring. I wonder if it would be safe to spread electric blankets down on the floor? Maybe you could then put area rugs on top of them. Or maybe use them for drapes, fighting the cold at the windows that is coming from the outside. Stay warm this winter, whichever you decide is most feasible and safest. I would stay away from kerosene heaters, at least the ones that my sister used to use. I think that they might be unsafe to use without proper ventilation and opening windows would defeat the purpose of heating the place, eh? Maybe a propane heater would burn cleaner?

Get one of those electric oil filled radiator types. They are very safe and cheep.

Convector heaters are quite good - you can set what setting you want.
