I drive a 98 Dodge Stratus, and every once in a while the pedal is quite soft, or non-existant. Its been going on for a while. Every two weeks or so, the fluid is just gone. I have no idea where it has gone to. ts not a bad line, or cylinder because it is not leaking anywhere. What could it be? It has the 2.4 Liter, and doesn't have ABS. Hope someone has an answer for me.

replaced master cylinder tonight. problem seems to be solved. i got back my firm pedal - actually its so much better that its almost hard to keep the wheels from locking up when coming to a stop! What a serious improvement. I dont know where it was leaking but it was!

i agree with 2muchcoffee, he hit the nail on the head. but if its every two weeks there will be a small trace of smoke if any at all noticable. pull the master cylinder off the booster and see if you can see a trace of fluid in the booster chamber.

Ok, it could be a bad master cylinder. What maybe happening is the master cylinder is leaking into the brake booster and the fluid is being sucked into the engine and then out the tail pipe.....Does it smoke? White smoke?
You have a serious leak somewhere you just have to find it. Get someone inside the car and really go at the brakes while you look under the car, around the master cylinder and so forth......if you find the leak you have found the problem

Good luck

I agree that is very likely the master cyclinder. There is also the chance that there is a crack in one of the break lines which connect the master cylinder to the two front calipers and the two wheel cyclinders in the rear drum brakes.

Are you sure your car doesn't have ABS. I thought it was standard on these cars.Regarles you need to take your car to a service station or dealer and get them to bleed your entire brake system correctly. Once bled correctly you brakes should work properly. Different cars now a days have certain bleeding proceedures for certain cars. They don't all bleed with the old fashion bleeding procedures. IE bleed mastercylinder first. Then go the the rt rear tire and bleed it. Then go to the left rear, right front then left front. Not all cars can have their brake systems bled like that anymore. Go get the whole system Bled right . And your brakes should work correctly.

look at the inside back of you rear wheels and see if it aint wet also loook around behind your master cylinder where it hooks up to your power booster and on the drivers side floor and feel if it the front brakes you normally see a puddle on ground if it is wet on rear wheels most likely you have a wheel cylinder leaking iit on power booster or on floor of car it is master cylinder

Don't see how you can NOT have a leak. Are you sure? Do you have a psycho stalker who secretly drains your brake fluid?
