At London Zoo they have some 'Red River Hogs', which look very much like a wild boar but is very Dali like, has a slightly longer snout and long dangley bits hanging off the ears when they grow older. They are slightly reddish and have a white stripe down each side of there back. Hope this is the one. They are very very cute, especially when young. Also check out Whipsnade as they have taken on 2 on the London zoo babies and are now 2-3 years old.

Warthogs and Red River Hogs are all very cute, but I'm quite sure your mom means a Tapir. They are super cute, have the snout and are actually a bit taller than a baby hippo but if you follow the link, I'm sure that's it (the one in the link is a Malayan Tapir, but there are different types who have different colouring)

There is the wart Hog from Afirca but there's nothing cute about them (for most people) and then there's the Javalina that lives in the southwest and even in back yards like mine or at lease go and feed through them. You can find them in the Phoenix Zoo in Arizona and believe it or not...They are more related to the Hippo than Swine. I personaly think they're pigs but Game and Fish says NO!

It sounds like you might be describing a Tapir?

Here is a link

It is the only thing I can think of that would have the size of baby hippo...
Tapir's by the way are not pigs.. they are closest related to
horses and Rhino's
There are 4 species and all 4 are considered endangered.

Hope this helps!

Is it a peccary? - they are from the amazon rain forest and surrounding regions. It is very like a boarin appearance.
It could be a tapir but this is quite a big creature (it is around the size of a fat horse with a shorter neck) and not really very boar like.
