For what purpose?

The N64 was slightly more technically advanced. The cartridges were much faster in their load times. So, in terms of capabilities, the N64 was better.

However, in terms of development, the N64 was famously problematic. The tools were complex and not very developer friendly. The PlayStation on the other hand was easy to develop for and developers coudl master the tricks and push the system harder and easier. So, in terms of attractiveness for video game creators, the PlayStation was far ahead. As a result, PlayStation's library of games quickly grew and even managed to pull away developers that had previously devoted themselves to Nintendo (such as Square).

Then there's attractiveness. Cartridges are much more expensive than CDs. New N64 games would be $60-$80 while new PS games would be $50 tops. Rereleased best sellers would be $20 for the PS, but $40 for the N64, twice as much. The PS was $100 more at launch, but since it had a year on the N64, and better development support due to the easy tools, it was also able to lower its price to better compete.

The PlayStation is clearly the overall winner. Though, the N64 is the topper for pure technical capabilities.

PlayStation because it has the better graphics and audio. The N64 was a good console, but the audio could leave a lot to be desired, and the graphics were very bad for some games. The PlayStation had many great games, the Final Fantasy series, the Tomb Raider series, the Tony Hawk series, and many more good games. The N64 plays my favorite game ever , The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. The N64 also had good FPS especially Tomorrow Never Dies. Anyway both consoles were great and I still play both of them and think that they were great additions to the gaming world.
