(1) The receiver is on file with the courier company, and his given written permission to leave packages without signature.

(2) The sender has given the courier permission to leave package without signature. It's called "No Signature Required".

(3) A courier driver is not doing their job properly, no one is home & they don't want to come back later. The driver might just leave it there. This happens sometimes.....and if the package goes missing and there is no signature.....the courier company is responsible (for at least the cost of the couriering) That's why if you're sending something of value.....GET INSURANCE!

Some delivery companies have standing orders from people they deliver to a lot to leave it without a signature.

In other cases it depends on what the package contains. Prescription drugs usually need a signature and so do high value items like expensive electronics.

Sometimes it can't be just anyone but a specific recipient who signs for the delivery, like for pricey jewelery

It is usually a delivery option when sending a package.

For example Fedex has 4 options:
1. Anyone can sign, including a neighbor, or you can leave a note.
2. Anyone at address can sign, no notes.
3. Only an adult can sign, no notes.
4. No signature required

The first 3 options cost more.

The carrier can determine this. Some want a signature so they don't hear that it never arrived. The other determination is if the sender pays more so there is a signature. They would then get a copy showing who received it.

I'm pretty sure it goes by the value, and if the shipper has requested a signature.
