First of all, the teacher should have a plan for you. Just follow it and have a couple of books already picked out to read for times throughout the day. If you find books that you enjoy, the children will enjoy hearing them too. Also, have a game planned for them to play or have some songs to sing with them. Whoever said that all you have to do is let them play obviously has never taught 5 year olds. Kindergarteners need to be occupied or it can get crazy. As long as there is a plan from the teacher and you have a couple of extra things planned, it will be fine:-) If things get a little intimidating, you can always ask one of the other teachers for ideas for activities. We were always willing to help out the subs at my school.

Do you have a plan of some sort? If not, it would be good to ask those whom have taught kindergarten before.
Get to know each of the children a little bit, maybe ask them what they do in class (but be prepared for almost any answers).
I wish you all the best and that you'll do your best and not be nervous when you're teaching them.

first relax, its mostly a babysitting job for 20 or 30 kids. Keep them happy and from beating each other up. Maybe try reading a story, or if they let you bring a guitar and play song for sing a long. Or just artwork. Or just many many different toys for them. Thats all anyone expects, if that. Relax.
Mostly it will be Tommy is teasing me, Fred has to go potty, things like that.

Follow the lesson plan the teacher is supposed to leave you. Also, be nice, but be firm they are just little children not devils.
