This question has gone four days without an answer. The old time methods for husking barley are the same methods used to husk other cereal grains such as wheat and rye. Some of these methods are still used in parts of the world. Flailing the seed heads to seperate the chaf and husk from the grain and then "winnowing" away the lighter chaf and husks using the wind are the simplest methods. A Yahoo search for "husking grain" (include the quotation marks in the Yahoo search box) yields 84 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, you will find pictures and descriptions of this ancient method as well as other information.

Good luck with your search for information.
