It is organized religion that is separate from the state. As another answerer noted we cannot establish any organized church as a state institution. The last I knew all Christians and Jews believed in God. The only ones who don't are the atheists and agnostics. They are trying hard to remove anything that smacks of religion from our country. This is supposed to be a democracy where the majority rules but we will respect those with a different opinion - as long as they don't try to kill us.

Most people do trust in God - they just worship him and honor him in different fashions.

SFAIK there is no "separation of church and state" clause in the US constitution. However there is one about not establishing one state religion and the state not being able to stop people from freely expressing their religions

It is very interesting that Franklin D Roosevelt objected to putting the phrase "In God we trust" on our money not because he had any objection to God, but because he believed printing the name of the Holy God on something so unholy was wrong.
