Did you watch Eastenders this evening? I think that, if it is your child, it is a totally different question to a wife/husband, partner. I have never been in a situation where one of my children were threatened . If you want to know whether I would give up my life for my ex-husband then no. I was married for over twenty years and can honestly say that nothing much happened to ask such a serious question as yours. In my opinion, until there is a real crisis, none of us know what we will do. On a sinking ship, who would you save?
Until it happens, who knows. Your question has made me think and, hence , my answer.

I would do anything necessary to protect any child. I'm fond of children (in a "suffer the children to come to me" kind of way) and I hate to see them bullied, abused, or badly treated.
I draw the line at their Parents shouting at them, I don't interfere in that way, but as someone who works with children I tend to give children more respect than most adults I see.
What the lady above said about protecting kids from paedo's I completely agree with, and bless you for doing an unpleasant but vital job.

I work for Dept of Corrections. I am a secretary for Therapists who counsel men and women on parole from prison. Their crime? Sex offending. Most of them have done crimes against children. It's a living. Don't get me wrong - I do NOT support it - I have to pay bills. I know by reading files (a little - I can't read too much - it disgusts me!) that I would protect not only MY children but anyone elses I knew of if these guys moved in anywhere NEAR them!! I'm not allowed to say who they are, but I can't help it if a few names drop if it means life and death. Believe I AM a mother as a lion to her cubs. You touch - you die!!

I would of course die to protect my wife. I would kill to keep her out of harms way. That is the easist things Icould do. The hard thing to do is to live for someone. To treat them like your most precised gem. Live every day with them as your only concern. Treat them with the honor and respect they deserve. Put them first always.Protect them from the world, but you must also protect them from your anger, annoyance, frustraitions, pain. If you do not treat them as the most fragile, beautiful thing in the heavens you will not be able to protect them at all.You might even be their destroyer.

It does you or your loved one no good to give your life. Make the other guy give his life. You must be willing to kill without hesitation or remorse, and this is just not words, it's a way of life.

Well if it was someone who I deeply cared about, I would do anything in my power to keep them out of harm. Thing is, you can't do things for people, unless they want the same for themselves. So do what you can do, but what's out of your hands is not your fault.
