depends what you want to play, acoustic or electric. Metal, indie, blues etc. need more info and a price range

As a fellow guitarist, I would recommend checking out your local independant music store where you can get informed, unbiased advice(chains usually bias towards a certain make you see.)

When playing a prospective new guitar, it's usually best to try it out on a digital amp, where it is possible to turn off the tone controls, which will let you hear the natural tone of the guitar.

Finally, from personal experience, if you're looking for a decent set up for a budget price, I would recommend a brand known as 'Vintage.' I personally have two guitars of this make, and they both play wonderfully.

If you have the money go for a Fender Stratocaster.
It is VERY versatile (Reggae and Death Metal guitarists play it) and it is very well crafted, which means that you'll certainly play YEARS before having to bring it to the repair shop.

The best place to go is to a music shop, some of them will let u rent guiotars for a few months to see if you like them then u have the option to buy. Hope this helps :)

Ask the store keeper in a specialist music store - they rely upon repeat business and thus will usually give good advice.

depends on what kind of music
cheap guitars that sound good and have good action would be

a Fender Stratocaster (mexican made) (us built is over $700)
Ovation Celbrity for acoustic/electric - they have good action and are very versitile
