there is another problem with epson printers . when the cartridges are at rest they sit over a tiny sponge after a period of time this fills up with ink wiped from the print head . when its full the printer stops working the red light flashes and sometimes an error message is generated. the cost of the sponge is small the fitting of the sponge by epson is astronomical. i was quoted £75 for a printer that actually cost £40 new. bet you can guess what i did . where my eppy once sat now sits a canon mp360 three years old and not a hint of a problem, oh and the inks are a lot cheaper. hope this helps

If the red light is flashing it generally indicates a fault - either a paper jam, mechanism jam or out of ink. Check that the ink cartridges are not giving false readings - take them out and re-install them, check that the mechanism is running freely and nothing is causing a jam and if all else fails, uninstall the printer drivers and then re-install the printer using the disc supplied with it.

the cartridge might have expired or if you haven't printed for a while try to take a test print. that option might be there in the software that you got with your printer.

the red usually flashes to change ink cartridge if your ink cartridges are definetly full try taking them out and put them back in, if it is a chipped model one of your chips on your ink cartridge may not have connected

you have a paper jam or obstruction in the operation of the mechanical parts, check to make sure you removed the protective tape from the print cartridge and that all mechanical parts are in their proper position, check to make sure no safety or shipping locks were left in the printer, check to make sure the paper path is clear ... hold all buttons down on the printer to force a mechanical printtest and diagnostic

have you tried re-installing the printers software (normally on a CD-ROM)?
if that doesn't work try looking up what the light means in the manual (it should say in there).
otherwise see if there's info at: http://www.epson.co.uk/support/_index.htm
if your in the US try:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportIndex.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&expansion=1000000
i hope i've helped.
