Go to the 'Tools' Menu, click 'Options'. Then in the 'General Pane' under sign in, uncheck (remove the tick) 'Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet'. Then click OK.

Messenger will have an options section where you can uncheck Launch on startup. Or you can go to start, run, type msconfig and click the startup tab and uncheck msn messenger and then close out of msconfig and get a prompt about needing to restart to complete the action, so restart. Easier, really, to find the option in messenger itself.

I had the same problem. You can fix this by clicking Tools --> Options, then selecting General from the list to the left. Uncheck the box that says "Show at startup" or something like that.

In other MSN help, if you have "Sign me in automatically" but you don't want to sign in, just right-click the icon in the taskbar and select "Cancel Sign-In". If you don't have that set but you do have "Remeber Me" set, it will pop up by default. I don't think you have a choice there. I could be wrong though. You can disable that option by clicking "Forget Me".
Not sure why I included that but whatever.
