#1...sweep floor to remove all surface dirt, as much as possible.
#2... approx. 2oz. Murphy's oil soap in 1/2 bucket of warm water I use the Libman brand Wonder mop with warm water and Murphy's oil soap to clean wood floors, and I do this professionally. Another great, mild cleaner for hardwood floors is Shakley brand wood floor cleaner.
Go to www.shakley.com to find it. Both products work very well. Just be sure to remove all surface dirt before washing, be sure to ring mop out as dry as possible as you don't ever want to leave to much water on a wood floor or it will ruin finish.

I take the wash pail and brew tea in it. Regular old lipton tea. 3 tea bags to one kettle of boiling water let it steep a few minutes. I vacuum the hardwood first, to get the dust & dirt out of the crevices then I add cool water to the tea to make it tepid, sometimes I add a drop or 2 of lemon essential oil, and I use a well wrung mop head that is only used on hardwood. The tannins in the tea make scratches and dings in the wood less noticable, and the lemon oil adds a nice fresh scent and sparkle to the wood.

The absolute best way I've found to keep your floors clean, while keeping the finish intact and shiny, is to use no 'cleaner' at all! Cleaners will ruin your finish and if you leave any standing water, that will also ruin your hardwood.
I bought myself a fantastic microfibre mop (I have MagicBlue, available at Walmart, HD, etc) that I use and it works great. Simply wet the removable mop head with hot water, wring out, and get to mopping. Rinse and wring a few times to do the whole floor and your floor will be clean and shiny and will dry within just a few minutes.

I use white vinegar and soft cloth or sponge and get down on my knees and wring out cloth or spong well so you don't leave water spots on the floor, then apply a coat of orange glo for hardwood floors, makes them shine like new.
