If you mean the Hernando de Soto who was with Francisco Pizarro.
He was born in the province of Badajoz in Spain. (Europe). After returning to Spain from the Pizarro expedition to Central America and Peru, he was given his own expedition, and explored what is now Florida, Alabama, North & South Carolina. . From there he went west "discovered" the Mississippi river, explored the territory of Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas and north Texas. He died while on this expedition on may 21st 1542, and his men sank his body in the Mississippi river, to avoid it being defiled by hostile indians.

There is another Hernando de Soto, a peruvian statesman and economist, born in Arequipa, Peru in 1941. Time magazine (may 1999 "Leaders of the new Millenium") named him one of the five main innovators in Latin America in the XXth. century.

Hope that helps answer your question!
