BJ has 42 books that are either science fiction or mystery. if he has 16 more mysteries than science fiction how many mysteries are there?

Come on Keylah: Take the 16 from the 42 and what do you get. Divide that number by two. You will get a figure. To prove you are right, add 16 to that figure and it will be 16 more than the other. Simple, eh...................

Since BJ has 42 books in all and he has 16 more mysteries than sci fi, let the number of sci fi books he has be x.

x + (x + 16) = 42
hence, x = 13

Number of sci fi books = 13
Number of mystery books = 29

42/2=21=16=37-mystery
42-37=5-sci fi
37+5=42

SF + M = 42
M = SF + 16
SF + SF + 16 = 42
SF + SF = 26
SF = 13 books
M = 13 + 16 = 42
