Due to a Trivial Pursuit error people thought his name was Phillip Columbo but this was not the case an early play for the character (Presription: Murder) had a person reffered to as Phillip but is not Columbo.

Peter Falk has said his characters first name was Frank but in the tv series no one ever said his first name because they thought the less viewers knew about the character the more interesting he'd be.

Here's how the Phillip error exploded..

Although fans have come up with a variety of guesses about Columbo's name over the years, the given name most commonly (and mistakenly) attributed to the gumshoe is "Philip," an error that apparently came about through a bit of protective chicanery. In the 1970s, Fred Worth published several compilations of trivia, including The Trivia Encyclopedia and The Complete Unabridged Super Trivia Encyclopedia. Into one of his Super Trivia books he inserted a "false fact" as a copyright trap, similar to the mapmakers' technique of including fictitious elements in maps (such as non-existent streets) to serve as evidence of unauthorized borrowing when their works were copied by others. The phony tidbit he chose to plant was the revelation that Lt. Columbo's first name is "Philip." Sure enough, when the trivia-based board game Trivial Pursuit took the market by storm in the early 1980s, Worth noticed that about a third of the question-answer combinations used in the game duplicated information (along with typos and misprints) published in his Super Trivia books — including a "smoking gun" question about Columbo's first name Worth filed a lawsuit against the game's inventors and distributors for copyright infringement, but he ultimately came away with nothing. (One cannot copyright facts, only their presentation, and the judge in Worth's case ruled that a board game such as Trivial Pursuit was a substantially different type of presentation than a book.) Nonetheless, Fred Worth's bit of fiction lives on, cited as fact in a variety of books, periodicals, and Internet resources.

The same with Mr. Sulu on Star Trek he didn't have a name until a writer gave him a name in a book. Hikaru. Fans were outraged but creator Gene Roddenberry just said "it's about time someone gave him a name."

Columbo First Name

There's no definitive answer on this.

IMDB doesn't have it. Wikipedia has an extensive entry with this...

Except for one very brief flash of Columbo's police ID card (which is essentially only viewable with a DVD player that features both zoom and freeze frame) Columbo's first name was never explicitly revealed in the series. When pressed, he would insist that it was "Lieutenant"

Lt. Columbo's first name has never actually been revealed. Many people say it is Phillip, but this is in fact untrue.

It's Frank!! They only revealed it in the final episode of Columbo, after that huge scandal with Trivial Pursuit. Type "Columbo" into Wikipedia - you can read about the whole thing there.

I don't ever remember hearing it on the show. I actually think that the character was not supposed to have one - when asked he said only his wife uses it and I don't think he ever says it.

I know Quincy did not feature his first name - in the episode when he got married various incidents made noises so we could not hear his first name.

Philip

................Sometime later "Prescription Murder" itself was reworked as a one-off TV Movie, where for the only time in the shows run we heard Columbo referred to by his first name -Phillip.
